Watch Your Mouth! Swearing and Food

Hi folks. Today I bring to you something a little different, as I will not be describing a mouth-watering recipe. Instead, I would like to write about food and health. I think this issue is quite important, so I felt I should dedicate some precious time to it. As you have already seen in the title, I will link my main points to swearing (anyone curious as to how?) Alright, now on to the fucking meat of this post (couldn't resist).

We are constantly being exposed to advertisements that recommend various great foods that we should all be consuming. Despite there being many good and healthy foods advertised, there are just as many bad, if not more, unhealthy foods and restaurants advertised. This means that it is important for parents to both discuss healthy food with their kids, as well as set good examples for them wherever they eat (home or otherwise). If you tell your child that it is important to eat lots of fruits, vegetables and limit fast food intake, that's great. However, if you preach this but bring home unhealthy food on a consistent basis, you could be in trouble. Destructive habits that kids develop in childhood can be extremely dangerous. It is of course possible to change and break bad habits, but it is easier said than done. The main point to take away is that teaching your children good eating habits is good for you and can potentially set up your children to lead healthy lives well beyond the comforts of the birds nest.

Not only should parents strive to teach healthy eating, but should also make a great effort to ensure their children are physically active. Many people reading this will no doubt be thinking that this is all old news and that I am wasting your time. Perhaps, but that surely does not explain why obesity rates in North America and around the world have never been higher and continue to get worse. Everyone claims to know everything, but most do nothing with that information. Eating healthy is great, but living a sedentary lifestyle can be as dangerous as living off nothing but fast food. I think my main points are pretty clear. If you commit to having children and being a parent then you should make the effort to ensure your children eat and live healthy lives. I am not saying that you should be crazy and make sure they never have a cheeseburger or other unhealthy foods. The key is to limit unhealthy food, maximize healthy food and be open and transparent with your children about food, the body and health. Now, let's finish this shitty post with the swearing connection.

Swearing in our world is as ubiquitous as sleeping, eating and touching boobs (I think we have all sworn at a boob before, but that is for another post). Why swearing and food? Irony. I don't give a hoot about using swear words, gosh darnit, but many people do. My views of swearing are actually real fodder for a later post, but know that I am more than fine with it. Anyways, I find it curious that so many parents go to great lengths to ensure that their children are not exposed to profanity of any sort, and come down extremely hard when they catch them. The curious thing is that one would go to such great lengths to prevent something that is nearly impossible to prevent (short of locking them in a small hole and letting them grow up there). Why pursue this impossible and questionable goal, but feed your kids trash? Why set endless bad examples with diet and exercise, but try and make sure your kids don't say the word "shit"? Teaching your kids to eat crap and not exercise is tantamount to making the following deal with the devil: Parents: I will make sure that my kids eat lots of crap and never exercise, as long as you agree to shorten their lives significantly...deal? Devil: Do you know how much paprika I am supposed to put on these eggs? Parents: I thought that was your recipe? Devil: Oh yes, nevermind...yes, yes, the deal is on. Lesson here: If you are going to perseverate about something as a parent, than it might as well be about healthy food and exercise, good day all.

Simple and Delicious Pizza

Hey. I am back after a short hiatus and I hope I can get into the habit of posting something about once a week. Enough with housekeeping and announcements, let's get to the food! Let me start out by saying that pizza is fantastic. It is unbelievably simple and amazingly delicious. I have eaten pizza all around the world, and the one word I would use to describe it is "consistent". It is consistently delicious all around the world, whether you are in Rome, Interlaken or Prague. I have had amazing pizza, as well as mediocre pizza, but most of the time it is at least palatable. I have been making my own pizza at home for many years now, and it is on par with the best pizza I have had anywhere else. The best part about mine is that it is probably healthier! Here is the simple recipe:

1) Whole wheat pita (buy from store like Loblaws in a package of 5 or so).
2) Extra Virgin Olive Oil
3) Regular shredded mozzarella, or slices of braided mozzarella (amazing!)
4) Pizza sauce (many varieties available in cans)
5) Salt and fresh cracked pepper

Directions:

1) Preheat oven to 400 Degrees Celsius
2) Place pita onto baking tray (onto parchment or tin foil for less mess)
3) Spread sauce onto pita
4) Pour small amount of Olive Oil onto middle of pita and spread all over
5) If using slice of braided mozzarella, put several on, but leave spaces with nothing but sauce because it will spread out). If using regular mozzarella or other cheese, you know what to do.
6) Bake at 400 for about 8-10 minutes, then broil (at 500 degrees Celsius) for about 2 minutes (make sure you watch it so it does not burn). The idea behind the broiling is to give the pizza a nice crispy and delicious crust.
7)Try adding fresh minced garlic for those who want an added bold and delicious flavour!

Hope everyone enjoys this recipe if you try it. It really is quite delicious and very simple to try. Let me know how it turns out. Another post coming this week. Enjoy the remaining part of the weekend.

Salmon

Since this is a blog about food, I figured it would not be a bad idea to make the first real post about my old friend salmon. I had eight 5 ounce pieces that had all the skin and bones removed. I rubbed them down with lemon juice and EVO and set to work preparing the main players that would send this salmon into flavour country. I sliced up some shallots, minced some garlic and ground up a mixture of fresh basil and rosemary. I salt and peppered the salmon, threw on some paprika and rubbed them down with the rosemary/basil combo. I then tossed on the shallots and garlic and made sure that everyone felt comfortable before their big day. I threw it all into a 400 degree oven for about 12-14 minutes. It was absolutely fantastic, and would recommend it to everyone who reads this blog (so far just myself, and I certainly think it is a fantastic recommendation).

Got a suggestion? Did something confuse you? Or maybe life has just got you down? If the first two apply to you, then send me an email or leave me a comment (for those of you who are feeling down, seek professional help or gorge yourself on a tub of ice cream, whatever is cheaper).

Enjoy the weekend,

Davey

Welcome to the Show

This is not the first blog I have ever had. I started one many years ago that was dedicated to the awesome game of bridge. Unfortunately, the blog was less than popular (perhaps the label "loser blog" is appropriate). Fortunately for all of my fans, this blog is sure to be better. I would like to focus on food, and other random thoughts that I feel the public should be made aware of. Please feel free to email me or make any comments regarding my posts. However, if they are filled with nothing but hate and anger (perhaps about the creme brule that could have been), at least try and make it constructive (calling me a douche or "shit eater" is all fun and games until someone gets cholera). Now that we have the ground rules laid out, let the fun begin.
